{"id":1105,"date":"2011-02-11T10:21:56","date_gmt":"2011-02-11T17:21:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/one-church.net\/crosseyedlife\/?p=1105"},"modified":"2011-02-11T10:21:56","modified_gmt":"2011-02-11T17:21:56","slug":"dont-be-that-guy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.crosseyedlife.com\/index.php\/2011\/02\/11\/dont-be-that-guy\/","title":{"rendered":"Don&#8217;t be &#8216;that&#8217; guy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have unleashed a veritable firestorm of controversy!<\/p>\n<p>Too bad I wasn\u2019t trying to&#8230; oops.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been reading a secular leadership book by Simon Sinek called \u201cStart With Why.\u201d Not a book I chose&#8230;\u00a0 just one I was assigned as preparation for a committee I am serving on, but it\u2019s been a pretty good read.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, there was an interesting illustration in the book that I pulled a quote from and posted on Facebook, my first mistake.<\/p>\n<p>After several comments to the post, twitter replies, text messages and a few stink eyes from some soccer moms, I realized I may have touched a nerve.<\/p>\n<p>I am pretty perceptive that way. I pick up on those subtleties. It\u2019s a gift.<\/p>\n<p>On top of it all, I got <em>defriended<\/em>&#8230; actually, that word is so stupid I can\u2019t even be mad about that one. It\u2019s kind of like the many times I got <em>undated<\/em> in high school (sigh).<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Ok, so, here\u2019s the quote. Read it and then let me explain. No more <em>defriending<\/em>, or I\u2019ll to <em>dispray<\/em> you.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIf it really doesn&#8217;t matter who wins or loses, just how we play the game&#8230; why do we keep score?&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>After posting that you\u2019d have thought I tried to maliciously edit some people\u2019s favorite passage from Scripture.<\/p>\n<p>Promise, I am completely good with that book.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t forget this is a quote from a book, not exactly something I would preach, but let me give you some context.<\/p>\n<p>In just the passed week I have had these three experiences:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A grandpa telling me that at his grandkids game he asked a guy to quit cussing at the grade school ballers. This grandpa was then invited to settle it in the parking lot&#8230; really?<\/li>\n<li>A Facebook friend commented on the \u201cmom fight\u201d in the parking lot after their kid\u2019s game<\/li>\n<li>A personal confrontation with a woman at Wal-Mart who dropped the F Bomb on her kid and threatened to beat him, and when we tried to step in called my wife a B&#8230; oh, you know that didn\u2019t end well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Does anyone else think the world is going crazy?<\/p>\n<p>On the other end of the spectrum are the uncontrollable coddlers. So concerned with keeping the peace, making everyone happy and engendering sufficient self-esteem that they are willing to compromise character for the sake of the Mr. Rogers effect.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter if you win or loose\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThe important thing is you have fun\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cJust\u00a0 do your best, you\u2019re always number one to me\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This and about a thousand other parentisms have the potential to foster a generation of young men and women who will never accomplish anything, but they sure will feel good about themselves while they are living in your basement. (Did you here that? I thought I heard Barney singing the &#8220;I Love You&#8221; song in the background.)<\/p>\n<p>Obviously then, I am not supporting either end of this continuum. I am not a fan of the \u201cIt\u2019ll all be ok crowd,\u201d nor am I cheerleading for the testosterone jerks who want to go toe to toe with the 15 year old ref at the YMCA game. Don&#8217;t be &#8216;that&#8217; guy.<\/p>\n<p>The Spiritual\/Scriptural reality is somewhere between CromagnaDad and the Stay Puffed Marshmallow Mom.<\/p>\n<p>No, I am not advocating some metrosexual, wishy washy, version of late 90s yuppie parenting. To be right in the middle is to be fully man, or completely woman.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t make you a man to lose control over a bad call. It takes a man to keep it under control and tell your kid to suck it up and play harder&#8230; life is full of bad calls.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re not super mom if you are queen of excuses and easy outs for your kiddos. Endorsing a culture of failure for the sake of feelings has some immediate gratification, but leads to longterm trouble.<\/p>\n<p>I really don\u2019t think Jesus cares terribly about the final score of a 3rd grade girls soccer match, but I also don\u2019t think the God of the universe is fixated on whether those same kiddos are having fun or not. There are some bigger goals he has for us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I think the primary goal in sports, academics, relationships, anything we do is to have the integrity, character and perseverance to work hard.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Obviously, we can\u2019t win everytime, but we can consistently work our rears off. It may not be about putting W\u2019s in the column everytime, but it\u2019s also most certainly not about floating through life on a continual search to find ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>We shouldn&#8217;t beat or baby our kids. We should lead them and grow them up into Godly adulthood. Let&#8217;s make little holy rebels out of them.<\/p>\n<p>God wants us in the game and playing hard.
