And, the thought of this is terrifying news to me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 9pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">I was one of those countless millions who crowded round the TV set once year when the Wizard of Oz was broadcast on one of the major networks and didn\u2019t want to miss the visual spectacular.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 9pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Then, years later, it came out on DVD and my own children got hooked on the \u201cLizard of Oz\u201d (by the way I didn\u2019t correct their mispronunciation out of sheer hope that they would really believe that was the title and would one day bring it up in conversation in High School, or better yet as an adult\u2026 hilarious. Oh, the therapy bills yet to come.)<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"width: 378px; height: 304px; border: 0px;\" src=\"http:\/\/images.quickblogcast.com\/104600-97408\/Tree.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"348\" align=\"right\" \/><!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 9pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Anyway, after the 4,376,291<sup>st<\/sup> viewing of the DVD version of the great and wonderful Lizard, er, I mean Wizard, it started to lose its luster. But, one thing about that movie never changed for me; the sheer freakiness of those living trees in the dark forest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 9pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">They creep me out, even now, currently, as I am typing, in this moment, freaked (is that fern on the coffee table looking at me\u2026 don\u2019t be stupid Addis, ferns aren\u2019t alive. But, I know that geranium in the bathroom has a gun. He\u2019s always been unstable!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 9pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">As a kiddo, the only thing that let me sleep at night after watching the Wizard was the fact that trees can\u2019t move around. The thought of waking up to the rustling of leaves while being beaned in the head by a tree throwing it\u2019s own apples from my closet would have seriously scarred me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 9pt; tab-stops: 268.5pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Hmm\u2026 maybe I\u2019m the one who needs therapy.<span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 9pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Still, I knew I was safe because trees were stable and fixed in position. All I have to do is stay away from them and I\u2019ll be ok.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 9pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">That\u2019s what I thought until my devotions with my wife this morning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 9pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">We were reading a very familiar passage, but a new thought jumped out at me. Pslam 1 reads this way:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 9pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em>\ufeff1\ufeff Blessed is the man <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 9pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em>who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 9pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em>or stand in the way of sinners <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 9pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em>or sit in the seat of mockers. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 9pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em>\ufeff2\ufeff But his delight is in the law of the Lord, <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 9pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em>and on his law he meditates day and night. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 9pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em>\ufeff3\ufeff He is like a tree planted by streams of water, <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 9pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em>which yields its fruit in season <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 9pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em>and whose leaf does not wither. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 9pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em>Whatever he does prospers.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 9pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: xx-small; font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em>The Holy Bible<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>: New International Version. 1996, c1984 (Ps 1:1-3). The trouble is that I have also been a dried up, leafless booger of tree straight off the set of Sleepy Hollow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 9pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Apparently, this tree can wander, and honestly, it\u2019s more terrifying than the thought of some seriously grumpy elms trodding down the yellow brick road to my neighborhood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 9pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">What\u2019s more concerning to me than the fact that I can wander away from God\u2019s refreshing and provision is that fact that I WOULD!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 9pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">What\u2019s wrong with me? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 9pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Wait, that\u2019s not an open question. It\u2019s rhetorical, so, please don\u2019t throw in your two-cents worth as a reply.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 9pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Here\u2019s what\u2019s wrong, even when we\u2019re planted in the right place and living well, there is a problem with the human condition that causes us to believe there is always something better. Thus, we wander.<br \/>\n\u00a0 \u00a0I have to be right, why else would infomercials have been created?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 9pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">The answer is simply difficult. Being planted in the right spot and digging in deep roots is really important, but we have to also develop the discipline of contentment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 9pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Paul knew this discipline when he wrote these words:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em>I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>\ufeff12\ufeff I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: xx-small; font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em>The Holy Bible<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>: New International Version. 1996, c1984 (Php 4:11-13). Just as any tree has to endure seasons, so will you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 9pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">It can\u2019t always be spring. There will be hot summers, ice storms in winter and dreary falls, but if you\u2019re planted in the right place then endure the seasons and learn the secret of contentment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 9pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">In your family, in your church, in the mirror\u2026 may you be planted by streams of water that produce contentment in you despite the seasons.
