Give me a break. Honestly, even if someone has a similar experience there are usually so many personal factors that truly associating seems cheap and distant (maybe that has less to do with others and more to do with the ego-centric way most people see the universe revolve around them. I\u2019ve heard many other people have that problem).<\/p>\n
The struggle is between empathy and sympathy. Anyone can sympathize and we do it well everyday. I feel sorry for lots of people, but I don\u2019t mind that because sympathy can be done at a distance as a long-range sport. Empathy is down in the dirt, face to face, mono-ee-mono (how\u2019s that for phonetically correct Spanish) that\u2019s relationally gutsy.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s why Linda K.\u2019s question is such a good one to:<\/p>\n
Here’s one I’ve been pondering since Christmas Eve: I always hear about how God (Jesus) came to live amongst us as one of us….to experience life as a human. But could He really get the full affect of being human when He had “super powers?” Therefore, it’s hard for me to look at Jesus’ earthbound experience as a true human experience and not think “You don’t know what it’s REALLY like.”<\/p>\n
Great question Linda! It\u2019s the same reason I don\u2019t like skinny people telling me how to diet. They obviously don\u2019t even know what good food tastes like, so, they\u2019ll never understand me. Ironcially you can\u2019t listen to the hefty people either because\u2026 well, their hefty.<\/p>\n
So, how could we ever really think that Jesus can empathize with us since He had those \u2018super powers\u2019? Well, this debate is much, much older than this blog. Throughout Christian history there have been debates about what Jesus was really made of:<\/p>\n
Arianism– Jesus less than God — more than human–
\nDocetism– Jesus wholly divine — his humanity and suffering only seemed to be real\u2014
\nEbionite– Jesus regarded as prophet rather than divine Word of God–
\nEutychianism– Christ has but one nature, divine–
\nMonarchianism–Undivided unity and sovereignty (monarchia) of God–
\nDynamic Monarchianism — Jesus a human who became a God–
\nModalistic Monarchianism –Argued that the Trinity is one God with different modes of divine action rather than distinct persons —
\nMonophysitism–Jesus was a God with human attributes; he had one (mono) dominant nature: divine–
\nMonothelitism– Jesus’s acts expressed one divine-human energia instead of two cooperating wills\u2014

So, what should the Biblical centerpoint be for answering Linda\u2019s questions, how can Jesus with God\u2019s super powers actually understand what it is to be like us.<\/p>\n
Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
\nWho, being in very nature God,
\ndid not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
\nbut made himself nothing,
\ntaking the very nature of a servant,
\nbeing made in human likeness.

This passage (one of the first Christian Hymns, by the way) says that Jesus had both the \u2018nature\u2019 of God and the \u2018nature\u2019 of man\/servant. He was a 200% individual, but the key to understanding Jesus\u2019 ability to empathize with us is sandwiched between those two claims: made Himself nothing.<\/p>\n
The Greek here literally means that He poured Himself out and\/or removed the content of Himself.<\/p>\n
Jesus was fully God and fully human, but willingly emptied Himself while here on earth (incarnate). This did not make Him less than God, or more than human. He simply shackled Himself so that He could experience His humanity as any other human.<\/p>\n
I think we see this pretty clearly in Mark 9. The disciple\u2019s try to cast out a demon, but can\u2019t git r\u2019 done. Jesus seems to have no trouble, and shreds that bad boy like 8 year old tax returns.<\/p>\n
When they asked what their problem was, Jesus didn’t say:<\/p>\n
Your idiots
\nWell, the trick is being God
\nIf you hold you left hand like this, press your tongue against your right check and with a pinch of magic\u2026
\nHe said, \u201cThis kind can come out only by prayer.\u201d While being God Himself, He was living a life like you and I with a complete dependence on His Heavenly Father.<\/p>\n
He allowed Himself to be limited (by Himself), so that this God-Man could experience life like feeble and frail humans. The difference was, He did it without sin and flawless perfection in His devotion to the Father.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s why we can believe Hebrews when it says:<\/p>\n
Jesus the Great High Priest
\nTherefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are\u2014yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
